Yoshitake DS-1 drain separator effectively separates condensate from steam and air piping systems with the aid of centrifugal force generated by its internal passage configuration. Condensate in steam and air piping can cause a decline in thermal efficiency, water hammer, and corrosion of devices, valves, and pipes. Using the DS-1 helps prevent these issues. In normal conditions, use a separator of the same nominal size as the piping for both steam and compressed air systems. Note: While this page focuses on the DS-1, much of the technical information also applies to the related DS-2 flanged model.
When steam or air flows into the drain separator, centrifugal force is generated by the internal structure of the body. Condensate swirls along the wall surface due to the difference in specific gravity between it and the steam/air, and strikes against the baffle. The condensate is then guided to the discharge port, while clean and dry steam or air flows to the outlet side through the nozzle.

Select a nominal size equivalent to that of the pipe (piping nominal size = nominal size of drain separator). Using a drain separator of a smaller nominal size may increase pressure loss, resulting in failure to keep the specified pressure at the outlet of a unit.

Note on Flow Velocity
Keep the fluid below the specified flow velocity. A higher flow velocity may cause condensate separation to fail.
Gasket Replacement
When using model DS-1 for steam applications, it is recommended to replace the gasket after 1 to 2 years as a guide.
