BURKERT 347953 (Type 2031) Pneumatic 2/2-Way Diaphragm Valve, ASME BPE Weld End DN 15

BURKERT 347953 (Type 2031) is an externally controlled 2/2-way diaphragm valve configured with a pneumatic piston actuator, an Advanced PTFE/EPDM diaphragm, and a stainless steel valve body with ASME BPE weld ends. Operating under control function A (normally closed by spring force), this valve provides zero-deadleg shut-off for ultra-pure, sterile, aggressive, and abrasive liquid or gaseous media. The valve accommodates working medium pressures from 0 to 10 bar, working temperatures from -5 °C to +143 °C, and short-term steam sterilization cycles up to +150 °C for 60 minutes.

Equipped with a compact 40 mm (size C) polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) actuator, article 347953 withstands demanding environmental conditions and is fully autoclavable. The unit features an integrated optical position indicator showing open/closed status, FKM piston seals, and a G 1/8 internal thread pilot air connection. Designed specifically for CIP and SIP cycles, this product configuration is delivered complete with a manufacturer inspection certificate 3.1 and membrane factory certificate 2.1.

Component Overview and Design Features

BURKERT 347953 Type 2031 2/2-way diaphragm valve component overview

BURKERT 347953 comprises three main assemblies: the pneumatic piston actuator, the sealing diaphragm, and the stainless steel 2-way valve body:

  • Transparent Indicator Cap: Polysulfone (PSU) with high visual clarity for monitoring valve switching states.
  • Actuator Housing and Cover: Polyphenylene sulphide (PPS), chemically resistant and autoclavable.
  • Pilot Air Port: Stainless steel 1.4305 with G 1/8 thread located at the bottom of the cylinder for CF A actuation.
  • Piston Assembly: Fitted with an internal FKM seal ring and a sinter metal guide socket.
  • Spindle and Compressor: Connected directly to the actuator piston to transmit linear spring force to the diaphragm.
  • Diaphragm: Advanced PTFE working face backed by an EPDM elastomer layer (material code EU), fastened via a snap-in button mechanism.
  • Body Assembly: Stainless steel body with ASME BPE weld ends and a weir profile designed for high flow and minimal dead volume.

Installation, Welding and Self-Draining Alignment

BURKERT 347953 Type 2031 self-draining installation position and angle

Correct installation ensures cavity-free draining and prevents thermal damage to internal elastomers:

  1. Actuator Disassembly Before Welding: Forged or tube stainless steel valve bodies must be separated from the actuator and diaphragm prior to orbital or manual welding into the pipeline. Welding with the actuator attached causes permanent thermal distortion of the Advanced PTFE diaphragm and PPS internals.
  2. Pipeline Slope (β): The entire pipe run must maintain an inclination angle between 1° and 5° in the direction of flow.
  3. Valve Self-Draining Angle (α): For diaphragm size 8 with ASME BPE 1/2" connection (SA92), align the valve body at a specific tilt angle: 26° for forged bodies (VS) or 23° for tube bodies (VP). The embossed alignment mark on the port connection must face straight upward.
  4. Leak Detection Orientation: Diaphragm bonnet relief bores must be positioned such that at least one bore sits at the lowest physical point to allow immediate visual detection of fluid in the event of diaphragm wear.

WARNING

Always supply compressed air (5.0 to 7.0 bar) to the lower pilot port before loosening or tightening body screws on control function A valves. This lifts the compressor off the weir and prevents tearing or stretching the Advanced PTFE diaphragm during servicing.

Tightening Torques and Assembly Instructions

Reassembly requires adherence to calibrated bolt torques. Excessive torque damages the PTFE sealing face, whereas insufficient torque causes external or seat leakage:

Fastener / ComponentSize / ContextRequired TorqueTolerance
Body screws (11)Diaphragm size 8 (Advanced PTFE/EPDM)2.5 Nm+10%
Actuator cover (2)Actuator size 40 (C)25 Nm—
Piston spindle nut (19)Actuator size 40 (C)3.5 Nm—
Position indicator (20)Actuator size 40 (C)1.5 Nm—
Transparent cap (21)Polysulfone cap with O-ring1.5 Nm—

Assembly Procedure for Control Function A

  1. Apply pilot pressure to the lower pilot air port to lift the compressor.
  2. Snap the diaphragm button into the compressor socket using a slight rotational motion. Ensure the identification tab is positioned perpendicular to the media flow direction.
  3. Place the actuator and diaphragm assembly onto the valve body.
  4. Lightly tighten the four body screws crosswise until the diaphragm makes even contact with both the actuator base and valve body flanges.
  5. Cycle the valve twice using pilot air to seat the diaphragm evenly.
  6. Exhaust the pilot air pressure so the valve returns to its spring-closed rest position.
  7. Tighten the body screws crosswise without pilot pressure in three progressive stages (approx. 1/3 torque ~0.8 Nm, then 2/3 torque ~1.7 Nm, then full torque 2.5 Nm).

Maintenance, Service Intervals and Spare Parts

Under clean operating conditions, the pneumatic actuator requires no scheduled lubrication. Scheduled maintenance focuses on the wearing elastomer components:

  • Post-Sterilization Retorque: After the initial steam sterilization cycle, check and retorque the body screws crosswise to 2.5 Nm to compensate for PTFE relaxation.
  • Cycle Inspection: Inspect the diaphragm for microcracking, deformation, or extrusion after a maximum of 100,000 switching operations (earlier if abrasive media are present).
  • Relief Bore Inspection: Regularly check the bonnet leak detection hole. If fluid emerges from the relief bore, replace the diaphragm immediately.
