TLV J7.2X is a reliable and durable cast iron steam trap with tight shut-off designed for medium-size process equipment. It features a self-modulating free float that provides continuous, smooth, low velocity condensate discharge as process loads vary, alongside a built-in thermostatic capsule (X-element) that automatically vents air until close to steam temperature.

Sizing Recommendation

Line numbers within the graph above refer to orifice numbers. Differential pressure is the difference between the inlet and outlet pressure of the trap. Capacities are based on continuous discharge of condensate 6 °C below saturated steam temperature. Recommended safety factor: at least 1.5.

Safety Considerations

DANGER

NEVER apply direct heat to the float. The float may explode due to increased internal pressure, causing accidents leading to serious injury or damage to property and equipment.

WARNING

Install properly and DO NOT use this product outside the recommended operating pressure, temperature and other specification ranges. DO NOT use this product in excess of the maximum operating pressure differential. Such use could make discharge impossible.

Proper Installation and Piping

  1. Before installation, remove all protective seals and blow out the inlet piping to remove dirt and oil.
  2. Install the steam trap within the allowable inclination, ensuring the arrow mark on the body corresponds with the direction of flow.
  3. Install the trap in the lowest part of the pipeline or equipment so the condensate flows naturally into the trap by gravity. The inlet pipe should be as short and have as few bends as possible.
  4. Support the pipes properly within 800 mm (2.5 ft) on either side of the trap.
  5. Install maintenance isolation valves at the inlet and outlet, and a bypass valve to discharge condensate during maintenance.

Piping Best Practices

  • Install a catchpot with the proper diameter.
  • Connect the inlet pipe 25-50 mm (1-2 in.) above the base of the T-pipe to prevent rust and scale from flowing into the trap.
  • Make sure the flow of condensate is not obstructed, particularly when installing on a blind end.

Inspection and Maintenance

Operational inspections should be performed at least twice per year. Before attempting to open the trap, close the inlet and outlet isolation valves and wait until the trap has cooled completely.

Operational Check

Visually inspect the trap when it discharges to the atmosphere to help determine immediate maintenance needs.

  • Normal: Condensate is discharged continuously with flash steam and the sound of flow can be heard.
  • Blocked: No condensate is discharged. The trap is quiet and its surface temperature is low.
  • Blowing: Live steam continually flows from the outlet with a continuous metallic sound.
  • Steam Leakage: Live steam is discharged through the trap outlet together with the condensate, accompanied by a high-pitched sound.
