TLV SS5-P Free Float Clean Steam Trap Stainless Steel

The TLV SS5-P is a stainless steel free float clean steam trap designed for pure and clean steam systems in reactors, fermenters, and sterilizers.

TLV SS5-P Free Float Clean Steam Trap Stainless Steel

The TLV SS5-P is a free float clean steam trap recommended for use in reactors, fermenters, and sterilizers in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and beverage services. These steam traps are suitable for a wide range of medium-capacity applications up to 0.6 MPaG (85 psig) and for steam-using equipment requiring high levels of sanitation. They discharge condensate continuously and automatically, at a temperature slightly lower than the saturation temperature.

Features

  1. Virtually crevice-free design with drain hole allows for condensate drainage without pooling, minimizing the possibility of bacteria build-up.
  2. Internal buff-polishing with an additional interior and exterior electro-polish option to 0.4μm Ra for improved resistance to bacterial growth.
  3. Self-modulating free float provides continuous, smooth, low-velocity discharge as process loads vary.
  4. Maintainable design lowers cleaning costs.
  5. Only one moving part, the free float, eliminates valve wear and provides long service life.

Discharge Capacity

The SS5-P Clean Steam Trap has a small built-in drain hole to ensure no condensate remains in the trap after operation. Therefore, a minimum condensate load is required during operation to prevent any steam discharge. The chart below shows the maximum steam discharge through the drain hole under no condensate load conditions.

Capacity Notes

  1. Differential pressure is the difference between the inlet and outlet pressure of the trap.
  2. Capacities are based on continuous discharge of condensate 6 °C below saturated steam temperature.
  3. Recommended safety factor: at least 1.5.

WARNING

DO NOT use traps under conditions that exceed maximum differential pressure, as condensate backup will occur!

Safety Considerations

WARNING

  • NEVER apply direct heat to the float. The float may explode due to increased internal pressure, causing accidents leading to serious injury or damage to property and equipment.
  • DO NOT use this product outside the recommended operating pressure, temperature and other specification ranges.
  • DO NOT use this product in excess of the maximum operating pressure differential. Such use could make discharge impossible (blocked).
  • DO NOT subject this product to condensate loads that exceed its discharge capacity.
  • Take measures to prevent people from coming into direct contact with product outlets.

CAUTION

  • When disassembling or removing the product, wait until the internal pressure equals atmospheric pressure and the surface of the product has cooled to room temperature.
  • Be sure to use only the recommended components when repairing the product, and NEVER attempt to modify the product in any way.
  • Install for use under conditions in which no freeze-up will occur.
  • Install for use under conditions in which no water hammer will occur.

Proper Installation

  1. Before installation, be sure to remove all protective seals.
  2. Before installing the product, blow out the inlet piping to remove any piping scraps, dirt and oil. Close the inlet valve after blowdown.
  3. Install the product vertically within the allowable inclination, as shown below, with the arrow on the body pointing in the direction of flow. Make sure the word UP on the body is facing upwards.
  4. Install condensate outlet piping.
  5. Open the inlet and outlet valves and check to make sure that the product functions properly.
  6. After steam has passed through the piping, allow the trap to cool and then further tighten the clamp.

Operational Check

StatusDescription
NormalCondensate is discharged continuously with flash steam and the sound of flow can be heard.
BlockedNo condensate is discharged. The trap is quiet, making no noise, and the surface temperature of the trap is low.
BlowingLive steam continually flows from the outlet and there is a continuous metallic sound.
Steam LeakageLive steam is discharged through the trap outlet together with the condensate, and there is a high-pitched sound.

Inspection and Maintenance

Operational inspections should be performed at least twice per year.

Parts Inspection Procedure

  • Gasket: Check for warping or damage.
  • Float: Check for scratches, foreign matter, oil film, or liquid inside the float.
  • Body Interior: Check for foreign matter build-up, oil film, scratches and wear.
  • Valve Seat and Drain Hole: Make sure openings are not plugged with foreign matter.

Disassembly / Reassembly

Part & No.During DisassemblyDuring Reassembly
Body Clamp (4)Loosen the wing nut then remove the body clampTighten wing nut to the proper torque; open inlet valve and allow live steam to enter and heat the trap, then close the inlet valve; after the internal and atmospheric pressures have equalized and the trap surface has cooled, tighten wing nut to the proper torque again
Upper Body (2), Lower Body (1)Take apart without scratching the gasket sealing surfacesWith gasket in place, align groves and gently place the upper body on the lower body
Body Gasket (5)Remove being careful not to scratch sealing surfacesReplace with a new gasket only if damaged
Float (3)Remove being careful not to scratch the polished surfaces of the float and lower bodyInsert into body, being careful not to scratch its polished surface, take care not to scratch or damage the valve seat
