BURKERT 20099135 Type 2933 2/2-Way Diaphragm Valve, DN 40 Welded 316L Cast Body

BURKERT 20099135 (Type 2933) is a manually operated 2/2-way shut-off diaphragm valve designed for hygienic, sterile, and aggressive fluid service. The unit pairs an investment-cast stainless steel 316L (1.4435) valve body with a high-temperature EPDM diaphragm and a compact, autoclavable polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) actuator. Configured with DN 40 (NPS 1 1/2, 38.1 x 1.65 mm) butt-weld ends matching ASME BPE and DIN 11866 Series C standards, it delivers a water flow coefficient of Kv 35 m³/h (Cv 40.8 gpm) across an operating pressure range of 0 to 10 bar.

BURKERT 20099135 Type 2933 manually operated diaphragm valve overview

Equipped with a 110 mm diameter handwheel (size M), an integrated visual position indicator, and an adjustable internal closing limiter, BURKERT 20099135 protects elastomeric seating surfaces from excessive manual clamping forces. The valve is fully clean-in-place (CIP) and steam-in-place (SIP) capable, meeting strict sanitary criteria including USP Class VI, FDA 21 CFR, and EC 1935/2004 compliance.

Performance Specifications and Tightening Torques

Flow rate data is measured at +20 °C with water at 4 bar valve inlet pressure and 3 bar valve outlet pressure. For diaphragm size 40 with cast valve body (VG) and 1 1/2" ASME BPE pipe connections, the nominal Kv rating is 35 m³/h (Cv 40.8 gpm).

Kv = 35.0 m³/h | Cv = 40.8 gpm | Medium Pressure = 0 to 10 bar

Handwheel Operating Torques

Applying excessive force to the handwheel reduces diaphragm operational life. The handwheel must only be rotated until the closed seat engagement is achieved:

Position Indication and Stroke Limitation

BURKERT 20099135 Type 2933 integrated stroke scale and position indicator

Turning the handwheel counterclockwise reveals the optical yellow indicator and its vertical stroke graduation scale. The graduated scale on the circumference of the handwheel provides 30 distinct angular positions per rotation, enabling reproducible stroke positioning.

Visual Indicator Position Note

Visibility of the yellow indicator band does not correlate directly with valve shut-off status. Seating closure must always be determined by feeling the positive stop or setting the internal closing limiter.

BURKERT 20099135 Type 2933 closing limiter adjustment with internal hexagon nut

Setting the Closing Limiter

Type 2933 manual actuators feature an internal hexagon nut serving as a minimum stroke limiter to prevent over-tightening:

  1. Rotate the handwheel clockwise until the valve reaches the fully closed position.
  2. Loosen the handwheel retaining screw using a 2 mm hex key and withdraw the handwheel.
  3. Screw down the internal hexagon nut until it bottoms out against the spindle stop.
  4. Align the square spindle and the nut hexagon with the handwheel interior geometry, then refit the handwheel.
  5. Tighten the handwheel central fastening screw to 0.9 Nm.

Limit Range Restriction

The minimum stroke closing limiter must only be set within the 0% to 25% opening stroke range. Never position the hexagon nut across the square drive area of the spindle.

Installation and Self-Draining Guidelines

BURKERT 20099135 can be installed in any orientation, though placing the actuator facing upwards is preferred. To achieve complete drainability in sanitary loops, specific pipeline orientation angles must be observed.

Self-Draining Alignment

Ensure self-draining by matching pipeline pitch to ASME BPE criteria. Orient the body marking on the port connection upward and position one of the bonnet relief bores at the lowest point to permit early leakage detection.

Disassembly Prior to Welding

Actuator and diaphragm components must be removed from the valve body before welding into process piping. Thermal conduction during welding permanently damages elastomeric diaphragms and plastic bonnets.

Step-by-Step Installation Procedure

  1. Rotate the handwheel counterclockwise until it reaches the fully open stop.
  2. Loosen body fastening bolts crosswise and lift the actuator and diaphragm assembly away from the cast body.
  3. Weld the 316L body into the pipeline according to standard sanitary welding practices. Deburr and clean weld seams.
  4. Place the actuator with diaphragm back onto the clean valve body.
  5. Snug the fastening screws crosswise by hand until the diaphragm perimeter is evenly seated.
  6. Cycle the valve open and closed twice to center the diaphragm profile over the weir.
  7. Reclose the valve and reopen approximately 20%.
  8. Tighten all fastening bolts crosswise in three uniform stages (approx. 1/3, 2/3, and full torque) to 8 Nm (+10% tolerance).

Maintenance and Diaphragm Replacement

When operated under specified service limits, the PPS manual actuator is maintenance-free. Fastening screws should be checked and retightened crosswise following the first steam sterilisation cycle. Inspect the diaphragm for wear at intervals up to 100,000 switching cycles, or more frequently when managing abrasive process streams.

Diaphragm Replacement Instructions

Diaphragm size 40 EPDM membranes utilize a threaded connection pin engaging the compressor drive:

  1. Rotate the handwheel counterclockwise to the fully open position.
  2. Remove the four body fastening screws crosswise and detach the actuator from the piping body.
  3. Turn the handwheel clockwise until the spindle reaches the fully closed position.
  4. Unscrew the worn EPDM diaphragm counterclockwise from the threaded compressor.
  5. Thread the new EPDM diaphragm hand-tight into the compressor, then back off counterclockwise by one half-turn to allow vulcanized stress relief.
  6. Return the actuator to the fully open position.
  7. Align the diaphragm identification tab at a 90° angle relative to the pipeline flow direction.
  8. Mount the actuator assembly onto the body and torque screws crosswise in three stages up to 8 Nm.
