Operating Limits and Derating Curves

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 pressure and temperature operating limits

Process limits are governed by the nominal pressure curve according to DIN EN 12516-1 (PN 25) and ASME B16.34 (Class 150). For PTFE soft-sealed trim, the continuous medium temperature range extends from -10 °C up to +130 °C. The valve achieves bubble-tight Class VI shut-off across this entire thermal range without requiring a downstream isolation valve.

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 AG2 ambient and medium temperature operating curve

The allowable ambient temperature depends directly on the process fluid temperature:

  • Curve 1 (Devices without display module / blind cover): Ambient operating limits allow full duty cycle from -25 °C up to +65 °C when medium temperature is within 0 °C to +100 °C. If medium temperature rises toward +130 °C, the permissible ambient temperature derates to prevent motor drive overheating.

Product Architecture and Control Principles

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 AG2 electromotive valve assembly architecture

BURKERT 20121116 uses a brushless DC electromotor coupled to an internal reduction gear and precision recirculating ball screw spindle. This converts rotational energy directly into linear thrust without pneumatic air supplies. In an unpowered standstill, the gear design maintains mechanical self-locking, keeping the valve firmly seated or positioned against maximum media pressure.

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 analogue control interface diagram

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 integrated position controller control loop diagram

The internal non-contact displacement sensor tracks the real-time linear spindle position (POS). The built-in positioner compares POS with the set-point value (CMD) supplied via analogue input (0/4..20 mA or 0..5/10 V). When a system deviation (Xd1) occurs, the electronics drive the motor via variable CTRL until the actual valve stroke matches the command within ±0.1% dead band.

Safety Position on Power Failure

Article 20121116 is configured without the SAFEPOS energy-pack storage module. If electrical supply voltage fails, the actuator does not drive to an open or closed safety end position; instead, it remains mechanically blocked in its last current position (fail-freeze).

Local Configuration and Actuation

Local configuration is managed beneath the blind cover without requiring an external display module.

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 setting operating state via internal DIP switch 4

Setting the Operating Mode

  1. Rotate the blind cover counter-clockwise and lift it off.
  2. Locate DIP switch 4 on the actuator circuit board.
  3. Configure DIP switch 4:
    • AUTOMATIC mode: Set DIP switch 4 downwards. The external set-point commands the valve, and the 360° LED ring is illuminated steadily.
    • MANUAL mode: Set DIP switch 4 upwards (ON position). The 360° LED ring flashes, and local button inputs become active.
  4. Replace the blind cover and turn clockwise until the alignment marks align vertically.

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 electrical manual actuation buttons and mechanical position indicator

Electrical Manual Jogging

Under MANUAL operating mode:

  • Press and hold the OPEN button to drive the control cone towards the open position.
  • Press and hold the CLOSE button to drive the control cone towards the seat.
  • Observe the mechanical position indicator (yellow marker) through the transparent indicator window.

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 mechanical manual override operation with 3 mm Allen key

Mechanical Manual Override

De-energized Operation Only

The mechanical manual override must only be actuated in a de-energized state. Never turn the override socket while supply voltage is active.

  1. Disconnect the 24 V DC power supply and wait until the 360° LED status ring extinguishes completely.
  2. Unscrew and remove the blind cover.
  3. Insert a 3 mm Allen key into the central manual drive socket.
  4. Apply gentle axial pressure to engage the internal clutch mechanism:
    • Turn counter-clockwise to open the valve.
    • Turn clockwise to close the valve.
  5. Maximum permissible tightening torque is 2 Nm. Exceeding 2 Nm upon hitting the mechanical end stop will cause internal damage to the manual gear mechanism.
  6. Remove the 3 mm Allen key and remount the blind cover.

Commissioning and Stroke Calibration (X.TUNE)

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 running X.TUNE automatic stroke calibration via push buttons

Whenever the actuator is remounted onto the valve body, or if the packing gland or control cone has been serviced, the automatic X.TUNE calibration routine must be executed.

Zero Medium Pressure Required

Never run the X.TUNE function under process medium pressure. If X.TUNE is started while pipeline pressure is applied, the controller will establish incorrect mechanical stroke limits, causing uncontrolled flow or actuator failure.

Performing X.TUNE via Internal Push Buttons

  1. Depressurize the piping system completely and drain lines.
  2. Apply 24 V DC supply voltage to the valve.
  3. Remove the blind cover.
  4. Simultaneously press and hold the OPEN and CLOSE push buttons for 5 seconds.
  5. The 360° LED ring lights orange continuously while the self-calibration routine executes and learns physical seat contact.
  6. Once X.TUNE completes successfully, the LED illuminated ring reverts to its standard operating mode colour.
  7. Reinstall the blind cover.

Maintenance and Spare Part Replacement

Actuator Removal

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 unscrewing the actuator from the valve body

Residual Pressure Hazard

Before opening or disassembling the valve, isolate the line, discharge line pressure, and drain hazardous medium.

  1. Set the valve to MANUAL mode and electrically or mechanically move the valve into an open position (at least 1/3 stroke open). Removing the actuator while the valve is closed will damage the PTFE seat seal.
  2. Switch off the 24 V DC power supply.
  3. Clamp the valve body in a holding fixture.
  4. Place an open-end wrench on the hexagon flats of the body connection.
  5. Unscrew the actuator assembly from the valve body and discard the old graphite seal ring.

Replacing the Control Cone (DN 25)

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 control cone replacement and dowel pin arrangement

  1. Support the cylindrical portion of the control cone in a prism fixture.
  2. Using a size 5 pin punch (for spindle diameter ø 14 mm on DN 25), knock out the dowel pin with a hammer.
  3. Pull the old control cone off the spindle end.
  4. Slide the new 1.4571/PTFE control cone onto the spindle and align the pin holes.
  5. Carefully insert a new dowel pin and tap it into the centre axis of the spindle using the hammer and pin punch.

Replacing the Spindle Packing Gland (DN 25)

BURKERT 20121116 Type 3360 packing gland extraction for DN 25 with modified socket wrench

  1. With the control cone removed, hold the actuator base connection with an open-end wrench.
  2. Engage the modified socket wrench (order no. 683223, SW21) onto the stainless steel spindle guide and unscrew it.
  3. Place the spindle on a solid support and apply approximately 6 bar of compressed air to the relief bore to eject the packing gland elements.
  4. Grease the replacement chevron V-rings using Klüberpaste UH1 96-402.
  5. Reassemble the packing gland pack onto the spindle in the specified orientation and sequence.
  6. Apply lubricant to the spindle guide threads and tighten into the body connection to a torque of 25 Nm.

Actuator Reassembly on the Body

  1. Install a new graphite gasket ring on the valve body shoulder.
  2. Ensure the valve drive spindle is in the partially open position.
  3. Lubricate the connection threads using Klüberpaste UH1 96-402.
  4. Thread the actuator onto the DN 25 valve body.
  5. Tighten the body joint using a calibrated torque wrench on the wrench flats to 60 ± 3 Nm.
  6. Power the unit and execute the X.TUNE calibration procedure.
